Golds For the Singles
October 30, 2008
No, I don’t think there is anything intrinsically abundant about being a single. However for those who are single-hearted, devoted and focused in purpose, mind and intention, there can be much abundance. Read on and you will know what I mean.
Anyone who has been watching the Olympic athletes these past days will undoubtedly notice the intense focus and concentration that each athlete has as they each prepare for the kick off of their event. I love watching the camera zoom in onto their facial expressions just before the gun goes off. The real game has started long before the actual event on the track took place. The mental game that of conquering the inner voice in their heads will determine a great part of where they will end up in the final analysis.
That focused concentration and undivided attention got them through the many difficulties, barriers and the distractions as they tear down the tracks on unfamiliar grounds under hot and humid weather in Beijing. What’s the application for us?
As we go through each "game" of our everyday lives we can:
1. Keep Your Focus with single and undivided devotion on what counts; keep focus on that which you want and pursue
Without the crystal clear vision of what it is that you want, you will be discouraged by every obstacle and barrier that comes along your way. Know what it is that you want to pursue and why that is important then fix your gaze on goal. Let nothing pull or push your gaze and attention away from your vision.
2. Turn Distractions Into Your Allies; Noise into Cheer
Every distraction that tempts you away from moving towards your original course will cost you your prized goal. Everyday, there are distractions from all directions, and the biggest challenge that I see is the noise and critical voices that go on in your head. That can cripple and paralyze you from going forward. I wonder if these athletes have somehow learned to turn the static noise from the crowd into cheers that propel them towards their focused goal?
The next time you hear critical voices with negative conversations in your head, turn the dial and tune into a channel with a chorus of cheers which motivates you forward. Reprogram that critical voice into the cheer leaders’ song.
3. Approach Obstacles With Tips From The Guides; there is a way to overcome
Every obstacle course in outward bound looks daunting and insurmountable at first blush. However, most if not all participants are able to conquer the obstacles after the Guides show them the way to approach the obstacles. How is that possible? There are tips and guidelines available, and I believe that the obstacles in our path are not there to stop us but to provide us an opportunity to approach it in a new and creative way.
Every invention starts with a problem. Every obstacle has object lessons. How do I reach the goal? Reach out for guidance and support and learn from those who have been there, done that. Find a coach in your area, get guidance and be supported.

Single Mothers Conquering Mountains – Top 7 Tips For Scaling Any Mountain
October 28, 2008
Single mothers experience various challenges, barriers and roadblocks in their everyday lives as they seek to hold together what’s left of their families. You want to bring the children up with their best interests in mind while working a full time job and taking care of the entire household chores; the finance and the housing and trying to come to terms with the recent divorce/separation or death of a spouse.
You have put in your all to build your dream family only to find it shattered and you wonder how you are going to scale the insurmountable mountain in front of you. Read on for my top 7 tips for conquering any mountain in your way.
Tip 1 – Know Why You Want This Mountain. Know what it is that you are seeking. What good will come out of conquering this mountain? How would life be different when you are at the top? Hold this vision as the foundation of this expedition. You need greater awareness of yourself.
Tip 2 – Identify The Mountains In You Way. Know what it is that you are fighting. Is it an inner emotional turmoil and unrest; feelings of anger and fear? Or is it the external mountain of logistics that you need to look into? You need clarity on the mountain in front of (or within) you. Seek out a mirror to help you get clarity.
Tip 3 – Know The End Game. Know what your goal is; is it to reach the top or is it to get to the other side of the mountain where new hope lies? The situation is often different for each single mother and you need to know what will work for you. Seek out guidance to help you identify the result you want.
Tip 4 – Put A Program Together. Know what needs to happen for you to conquer this mountain. What strategy will get you up hill or around the mountain given your strength, your talents, your resources, your burdens and your limitations? What needs to happen mentally, physically and spiritually? You need support and guidance to put together a program that will get you there step by step, slowly but surely.
Tip 5 – Put Together A Support Structure. Having a program is great, but you also need a support structure to help you get through the program. In the process of the journey, there will be moments of testing, of discouragement and despair. You need a regular support group around to lend a hand while you recharged your energy and continue on the journey.
Tip 6 – Work Those Muscles. There is no magic pill, no Genie in a bottle that will grant you instant success. You have to practice and build those muscles so they are strengthened with each practice session. You need to establish accountability with someone who works alongside you in the long haul; for a mountain is not conquered in a day.
Tip 7 – Accept That Which Is Not Within Your Control. Know and accept your limitations. You may work those muscles regularly but you also need to accept that your body will need to adjust to altitude and thin air as you work uphill. In your relationships, your family, your profession, your health, isn’t it true that there are things which are out of your control that you need to accept? You need to know when to push and when to let go.
You can conquer any mountain with proper guidance and support.

Self Development Programs for Single Moms
October 27, 2008
How do you choose a self development program? What criteria do you look for? There are so many options to choose from, how do you know which one is for you? As one who believes in continuous improvement, I spend time sourcing, researching, evaluating, testing and attending previews and enrolling in different self development programs offered locally and internationally. Here are the top 7 tips you can use as you choose your self development programs.
Tip 1 – Objective of the Program – What is the end result or benefit that the program? What problems do the program solve and what benefits are you getting out of the program?
Tip 2 – Quality - How extensive is the research into the curriculum, how much resource and expertise does it draw on? Are there testimonials for the program? What do people in the industry have to say about it?
Tip 3 – Curriculum / Content – What competencies does the curriculum align to and emphasize? You don’t want it to be too wide nor too shallow. Making it too general will not address specific issues. Covering too much will confuse and complicate and not leave room for focus and depth. Is the curriculum continuously updated to keep with the trends?
Tip 4 – Accreditation – If you are looking at certification programs then be very sure to check out who the accreditation body is. Equally important is to find out what is it about the program that has been accredited and implication that has. Do not be confused by similar sounding words.
Tip 5 – Trainers / Coaches are the vehicles that deliver and transfer the concepts. Look for role models who inspire and who lift you from where you are to where your next level is intellectually, emotionally, spiritually or physically. If you are only interested in knowledge, just google for free net information.
Tip 6 – Delivery Style – Asians are too familiar with being spoon fed while the inner questioning minds have not been encouraged to function. Facts are cramped down without space for digestion or application. Look for delivery style that respects and believes in the potential and creativity of the individual, that is inclusive rather than one that insists on one particular fixed methodology.
Tip 7 – Value for Investment - Who is the centre of the self development program? Are you allowed the freedom to be yourself in your learning style? A 3-day workshop will not deliver the same results and benefits as a program that allows for implementation over a period of time. While knowledge can be cramped in over 3 days, internalizing of the new concepts will take longer.
